Christiana Meyer is 50 year’s old from Ontario.  She was diagnosed with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) when she was 18-year’s old.  ADPKD is an inherieted condition that causes small fluid-filled sacs called cysts to develop in the kidneys.  ADPKD is caused by a genetic fault that disrupts the normal development of some of the cells in the kdneys and causes cysts to grow. Christina inherited the disease from her mother. Her mother was on dialysis for approximately 12 years, with many complications, and sadly this disease took her life a week before her 67th birthday. Christina was put on a medication that is supposed to help slow the progression of the disease but her e-GFR continues to drop and today her kidneys are functioning at approximately 20%. There is no cure for Kidney Disease but an organ transplant may prolong and enhance a person’s quality of life. Christina needs a kidney from a living kidney donor. A kidney from a living donor offers many advantages and generally lasts longer (15-18 years on average) and has a higher success rate. A donor, in good physical health, can live a normal healthy life with just one kidney.
