In 2007, Burke visited her doctor for constant lower back pain and fatigue, her doctor sent her to a kidney specialist or nephrologist where she was diagnosed with PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease). Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder in which clusters of cysts develop primarily within your kidneys, causing your kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time. After diagnosis, her kidney function dropped to 15% from 75%. Her father passed away from this same genetic disease, in the same year 2007, she was diagnosed. Maria is searching for a kidney donor.
