BRITTANY NEEDS SOMEONE TO HELP SAVE HER LIFE

35-Year-Old School Resource Officer Is Waiting for a Life-Changing Kidney Donor

THE STORY OF A 35-YEAR-OLD SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER

Brittany Hood is a 35-year-old school resource officer at Ronald McNair Junior High School in Lake City, South Carolina. She also coaches three sports at Lake City High School. She has built her life around serving others.

About four years ago, Brittany was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a genetic condition that has progressively damaged her kidneys. Her kidney function has now declined to the point that she needs a transplant, and she has recently been placed on the kidney-transplant waiting list.

At first, the disease barely interfered with her life.

“I just lived a normal life.”

She continued her career in law enforcement, returned to her community, and kept doing what she loves. But the disease has progressed.

Today, Brittany is waiting for a kidney while continuing to work, coach, and serve the young people in her community.

A LIVING DONOR MATTERS

Brittany is only 35, and her doctors are encouraging her to pursue a living kidney donor.

Brittany explained that doctors prefer a living donor because a kidney from a living donor can potentially provide a longer-lasting transplant than a deceased-donor kidney.

Several people have already reached out and completed an initial donor survey. But Brittany is still waiting for an answer.

SHE SHOWS UP FOR HER STUDENTS — EVEN ON THE HARD DAYS

Brittany says some days are physically and emotionally difficult.

But then she thinks about the children.

The students are counting on her.

So she comes to work with a smile. She talks with them. She coaches. She keeps going.

“The kids need you. So, I always come with a smile on my face.”

That determination is what makes her story so powerful.
